Brick Repointing

Repointing is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from the joints between bricks and replacing it with fresh, properly matched mortar. It is one of the most important maintenance tasks for any brick-built property.

Over time, mortar joints erode due to weathering, frost, and moisture. Once the mortar starts to fail, water can penetrate the wall — leading to damp, structural movement, and costly damage. Repointing at the right time prevents all of this.

Our Process

  1. 1Careful removal of old mortar to a minimum depth of 15–20mm
  2. 2Thorough cleaning of joints to remove dust and debris
  3. 3Mixing mortar to match the original in colour, texture, and strength
  4. 4Careful application and finishing to match the original joint profile
  5. 5Final inspection and clean-down

Suitable For

  • Period and Victorian properties
  • Modern brick homes and extensions
  • Garden walls and boundary walls
  • Commercial and industrial buildings
  • Chimneys and parapet walls

Targeted repairs to failed or damaged mortar

Mortar Repair

Not every property needs a full repoint. Where mortar failure is localised — around window reveals, chimney stacks, or specific sections of wall — targeted mortar repair is a cost-effective solution.

Cracked or missing mortar is an entry point for water. Even small areas of failure can allow significant moisture ingress, especially in exposed locations like chimney stacks or gable ends. Early repair prevents the problem from spreading.

Our Process

  1. 1Assessment of the extent and cause of mortar failure
  2. 2Careful removal of failed mortar without damaging surrounding brickwork
  3. 3Preparation and priming of the repair area
  4. 4Application of correctly matched mortar in layers
  5. 5Finishing to blend seamlessly with existing joints

Suitable For

  • Chimney stacks and pots
  • Window and door reveals
  • Isolated areas of wall failure
  • Post-movement crack repairs
  • Damp ingress prevention

Cavity Tray and Lintel Installation

Cavity trays and lintels are critical components in cavity wall construction. A correctly installed cavity tray directs water out of the wall cavity before it can penetrate the inner leaf, while lintels provide structural support over openings such as windows and doors.

Failed or missing cavity trays are one of the most common causes of penetrating damp in cavity wall properties. Without a properly installed tray, water tracking down the outer leaf has no route out and instead bridges across to the inner wall. Similarly, corroded or undersized lintels can cause cracking and structural movement around openings.

Our Process

  1. 1Inspection and diagnosis of existing cavity tray or lintel condition
  2. 2Careful removal of brickwork to expose the cavity
  3. 3Installation of correctly specified cavity tray with stop ends and weep holes
  4. 4Replacement or installation of correctly sized steel or concrete lintel
  5. 5Rebuilding of brickwork to match existing bond and mortar
  6. 6Final inspection and clean-down

Suitable For

  • Properties with penetrating damp above windows or doors
  • Cavity wall homes with failed or missing trays
  • Corroded or undersized lintel replacement
  • New openings in existing cavity walls
  • Extensions and new build brickwork

Important

Why Mortar Mix Matters

Using the wrong mortar is one of the most common — and damaging — mistakes in repointing. Modern cement-rich mortars are too hard and rigid for older brickwork. They trap moisture, cause spalling, and can crack the bricks themselves.

We always assess your brickwork before mixing mortar. For period properties, we use lime-based mixes that allow the wall to breathe. For modern brickwork, we match the original specification. The result is a repair that lasts — and doesn't cause new problems.
